I have a question for anyone with a good knowledge of the history of Peanuts-
When Charles Schulz changed the way he drew Charlie Brown (from the style in these early strips to the way he appeared later), did the change occur slowly, or all at once? Also, is there a specific time frame that this change occurred?
@sloachesThe style changed quite fast in the first 5 years (1950-54), the next 5 years there was slower refinement, some characters were still developed (Snoopy) or were growing up (Linus). From the 1960s on the characters looked and acted almost as we know them now.
This gag was actually started by Violet. In fact, many of Lucy’s traits were shown by Violet first. She was also the first one to call Charlie Brown a blockhead, before this too became characteristic on Lucy.

Lucy probably saw and thought that’s how the game is played

My thoughts exactly! So it didn’t really start out to be cruel.

Saw an interview with Schulz after he retired. He cried when he said he never let Charlie kick the ball.

She didn’t go and yank it away, either. She just ran away and left the ball.

I love seeing Schulz’s unique humor develop day by day. It is amazing to look back over 65 years of history here, knowing what would happen later.

Haven’t been following really closely but can I assume the piano eating tree is the precursor to the kite eating tree?

It’s not surprising she had to duck, she’s holding it on the wrong side for a right-footed kicker.

Then Lucy takes over. Lol

Charlie Brown looks so determined; but as I said yesterday, he is a slow learner…

Unless it’s an exceptionally windy day, kickoffs (as opposed to field goal and extra point attempts) don’t NEED no stinkin’ badges! (I mean holders!)
