Running the train on the carpet is not a good idea unless it is a wooden train. I have a Green Bay Packer freight train in h/oscale I am selling! Anyone interested??
These days Lionel sets are pretty expensive but back in the day most middle class and a lot of working class families had an O Gauge Lionel or American Flyer set, or maybe a cheaper HO set. You can still get affordable HO sets today, but you get what you pay for and the cheapest sets just aren’t worth it. Of course if you’re talking about hobbyist equipment, then you could be talking about some serious money.

That’s what I need for my train set. A tunnel. Well, that and some room to set it up.

Remember these moments, Chuck. In a few years, you’ll be longing for a normal dog, just like everyone else.

…and that’s why you don’t see a lot of dogs running loose on trains.
