I don’t know. I think the older you get, the harder it becomes to find a pearl that moves you in the giant tidal wave of cultural waste. You know all the themes, tropes, plot devices, relative pitch scales, lyric cliches, marketing devices, etc. It becomes hard to listen to the latest bubblegum pop tune or see the latest fashion without rolling your eyes, pulling up your pants, and spouting off with a “Back in my day…”

We youthfulness-challenged folks have to gracefully accept that we are no longer in the target demographic for any sort of pop culture. That’s why I and my friends no longer find SNL funny, and why we don’t “get” today’s popular music and entertainers. There’s no point in fretting over it. Just realize that it has been ever thus. It is for us as it was for our parents and their parents before them. It is the way of the world. But we have our pleasures too, and we know things, like the foregoing, that the next generation has yet to learn.

The New Kids On The Block are touring with TLC and Nelly. I think it’s sponsored by VH1’s Back to the 90s.

It eases the pain of the knowledge of our mortality that we really don’t fit here anymore.

I still have oldies radio and TCM playing movies from before I could watch them…and some newer stuff on TV.

On the other hand, the music they play in supermarkets is right up your alley.

I retired after 45 years in electronics. The new technology is great and I expect it will become even more amazing. What I find disturbing is the hate filled politics and anti-social behavior that has become the norm. Riot and Loot are and should always be “four letter words”, not expected.

But, isn’t that just pushing a stereotype? At 66, I like a lot of the new music, the new films and new technologies. Plus, it is fun to watch my 20 something friends discover things like old jazz and 60’s fashions.

When I was young – I was in that demographic they pitch to. But no money. ….Now …. still can’t afford the toys.
