    For @LeadingEdge from yesterday:

How long ago was your last French class? The passé composé means both “I studied” and “I have studied.” There’s no such construction as “J’étudié.”

Does Calvin ever realise that one day he will marry a girl just like Susie?

This looks like the first draft of a Calvin and Hobbes board game—which would be way more fun than Monopoly.

Where else but comics comments can discussions be had about French verb tenses.I was listening to some Canadien engineers talking in French, one of them was having trouble with his car. He looked at me in with a superior sneer and informed me that sometimes they had to speak in their own language. I said something to the effect that Portugese just sounds funny to Texans.

Drawing diagrams of fun things to do IN the snow isn’t going to MAKE it snow, Calvin!

I fear it will take more than snowballs to eliminate ISIS and other similar threats to the civilized world. Containment just isn’t enough, Mr. prez…

It also says “Destroy this map,” but that didn’t happen either.

“Google has a long, long way to go before it can ever be considered a reliable translation tool…”

I often use it for Spanish but usually have one of my fluent family members check it for accuracy before sending it off because I’ve found it makes too many mistakes. Even some that I can spot even though I’m not 100% fluent.

Pas correct. The Subjunctive isn’t called for here, because “Je vous assure que ce que vous dites est assez bon” is making a statement of fact (“what you are saying is good enough”). The Subjunctive would be correct if the speaker were making, say, an indirect command (“Je voudrais que vous le disiez en français” I would like you to say that in French").

I love French…and I also love that the French people that I have encountered in France have all been more than helpful in helping me express myself. I had high school French and went to France for the first time 14 years later. The language just started coming out of my mouth and everyone was more than helpful…as they have been on 2 more trips to Paris. My taxi ride to the airport was a reciprocal French/English lesson between the taxi driver and myself…such fun!!
