Newborn killer whales- and their mothers- do not sleep for the first month of their lives. Bathing and radioactive water at radium spas was popular in the United States during the early 20th century. For you! In China, it's considered rude to give an umbrella as a gift, as they are associated with loss and unhappiness.

Loss and unhappiness? Can any Chinese person elaborate here? As for the orca calf, does it sleep with a surrogate mother for that one month?

The spa—I guess it gave your skin that much desired radiant looking glow to it.

I never want to be near an umbrella; They attract lightning in a storm because the pointed metal rod helps to ionize the air above it, just like a building’s lightning rod. Then there are the eye pokes as they you pass by – taking up the whole sidewalk.

Are they repeating some of this stuff? I’m almost sure I’ve read the one about the whales and the baths before. Don’t remember the umbrella thing, though.

An umbrella is the last thing I would think of to give someone as a gift.

The umbrella item is surprising, since in Imperial China, parasol bearers were a symbol of rank.

Still shaking my head about the ladies who painted wrist watch dials in the 1930-40’s with radium…they licked the brushes to give a fine edge…and…gave their lives..

Most shoe stores in the ’40s had X-ray machines you could use to check your fit (for as long as you felt like it). Kids loved to play with them too.
