There was a teacher strike late in the year after I graduated from high school. I happened to be an umpire for the local rec baseball program that summer. One of the managers, who I knew (but did not have) as a junior high teacher, came up to me and asked me what I thought of the union chief, who he mentioned by name. “Oh,” I asked, “the professional tantrum-thrower?” “His son’s on my team,” the manager informed me. “That doesn’t matter,” I replied, “he’s still a professional tantrum-thrower.”
