Jimbo’s efforts are probably why so many grocers in my area are now packaging fruit and veg in those styrofoam containers, instead of stacking them so we can pick individual items ourselves…
First summer I worked in the produce dept we had a big Idaho potato display contest (back when they had contests like that). We had the pallet on the floor not ten feet from the display, had the table filled 2 layers in almost stadium seating precision labels up, banners hung, employee on the ladder with the camera. Customer walks over looks at the pallet, the display and picks up maybe 4 or 5 different bags before looking at the pallet again and grabbing a “new” bag. Biggest issue was it shifted the rest of the bags. She turns around looks at all of us just staring at her and says “Oh I’m sorry, well at least it’s job security for you!”
“Hide the fresh ones at the bottom”. Who has time for that? When I worked produce, the challenge was to keep the bins full. No one has time to hide the fresh ones at the bottom!
actually when I worked produce the fresh ones were in the back unless there were only a few old ones left. you have no place to put dozen of pieces of produce while you refill… so you move the older ones forward and put the new ones in back.

I’ve not done it with oranges, but I have caused an apple-anche.

About the only “picking” I do is to avoid dented cans or damaged cartons. I have childish faith that most of the merchandise is similar. :-)

that’s not true, the ones at the bottom are more likely to be bruised because of the weight of the ones on top of them.
