Joe, I remember those coke machines having a distinctive odor when you opened them up. Also I remember the stand up machines with bottles on the right side of the machine.
It wasn’t really a “dirty” type odor. Just a distinctive odor that I noticed in the two or three I had contact with. In fact, one was in the corner “penny candy” store at the end of our block. I remember that store being fairly clean in appearance, though I was awful young at the time.
G’day Jason, Joe, Dry, Lonewolf, Bjorn, Barb and all Meggsie fans
Don’t over-estimate Dad’s skill with the tenderiser, the two nails in the lower board on the roof go into thin air. They wouldn’t have even done that if Mum hadn’t turned a blind eye. If she had cut up rough over the tenderiser then Ginger and Dad would have had to boil up some flour and water to make a glue; maybe toss in a little wattle sap for good measure.
Talking of glues and of smells, does anyone remember ‘Clag’? Did/do they have it in the US? Every primary school in Oz had bottles and bottles of it for craft lessons. It was refined from flour and water with an added preservative and had a very distinctive odour. Also had a repulsive taste as venturesome lads such as me found out.
Can’t say I’ve noticed an odour around Coca Cola dispensers Joe, can’t stand the stuff so never go near them. Do like the smell down the detergent and soaps aisle at the supermarket though.
Evening here in Melbourne in Oz. As always, chores and dinner await. See ya’ later.
usfellers, never heard of clag, but the one thing I remember about smells in grade schools, hope no one is eating breakfast, was that powdery/sawdusty stuff the janitor spread on the floor after kids, well, you know!
Bald 716, I was thinking along those lines, but I think the ones that I was in contact with used refrigerant to cool the product. Could still have been the condensation from the cooling effect if they were not cleaned enough I guess.
Pity help me, but can’t resist this. ottod, Ginger Meggs is all about good taste. Study the pictures man! Live and learn
Hi again Jason, Dry, Joe, Lonewolf, Barb, Bjorn
Before I go to bed, may I ask if the smell of the Coca Cola dispensers was anything like an ice rink I frequented in Melbourne, Oz called, would you believe, St. Moritz. On school sports days, which were free, we descended on it and as soon as the whiff of that ice got to us we were up and away. It also meant we could mingle with the female art students from the same college, something that was forbidden on campus.
Loved the skating, loved the gals, loved being 16, love thinking about it.
Hi Joe top of the list of all-time reminders is smell, closely followed by music. Methinks your ‘Library Paste ’ was our ‘Clag’. Did it have a sharp smell and a brush held in a hole in the lid?
Usfellers, I guess it was somewhat like the ice rink smell, but with more of a metal odor mixed in as well. I am tring to think if there was anything else that came close to that odor.
How about the smell of a mimeograph machine and the copies they used to produce?!
C’mon Joe, you’ve got to know what I am talking about.

I still think they need to build MIke a new house and get a Chihauah (again, spelling) for the litttle house, and give Mike a traveling buddy!

Love how all the nails are evenly embedded, Mr. meggs must have had good experience with the meat tenderiser.

With as much experience as has been referred to about Ginger’s father with projects, it is not surprising that there are only two nails per board.

just knock out the end with the hole , make it an open house
i remember those coca cola coolers with the maze type racks inside and the odor, i think it may have been from the ice used to cool the drinks

Dry - I remember that smell! Yuck! It was bad enough that it might cause them to have to clean up a second “spill”.

I think jason is angling for some sort of Green award with all the recycling he’s been doing.

Oh that little brush in the lid! In a brown bottle ours was, and it was indeed LePage, Joe!. Funny the things you think of after all these years!
usfellers I must agree, smell and music bring back my memories, as well as certain other sounds.
