What to do when a cartoonist (or writer) comes up with a joke, realizes it’s not funny, but wants to use it anyway? Use it and then have other characters point out it’s not funny.
Unfortunately, that still doesn’t make it funny.
It’s a pun! The characters in the last panel have to react that way. That doesn’t mean it isn’t funny. In fact this one is very clever.
Those doggone temperatures are being so mean again! They need to be punished good and taught a lesson…

As a life-long lab rat, I see this as a depiction of real life (including the lack of humor in management).
