What I remember from a long ride on Rte. 66 fifty-three years ago, from Albuquerque to Ft. Smith, Ark.:- Trees outside Amarillo growing at nearly 45 degrees from the unending wind.- Passing a “Welcome to Oklahoma City” sign, then driving for another hour before stopping to eat. I asked the waitress what town we were in. Still Oklahoma City?! She explained it was the geographically largest city in the U.S.- Being stopped by a cop for hogging the passing lane. When he learned we were two GI’s going home before being sent to Germany for the Berlin Wall Crisis, he gave us a warning and let us go.- All the driving was done by this guy from N.C. named Orr, with his own car, a huge convertible, top-down the whole way. I’ve sometimes wondered what happened to him. I haven’t Googled him in years, but never had any luck when I did. That doesn’t prove much though. For all my commenting as schearph, I am almost invisible on the Internet myself.

I suppose there’s a song or movie reference here, but I have no idea what it is.

And a good thing he’s wearing dark pants so you can’t see the blueberry stains on his knees.
