Yukoner, my job went from Mac to Windows, and I could not agree with you more! Ever since getting this Windows machine it has been nothing but headaches!
I started out with Bellsouth, and they were bought by AT&T, about the same time I went from W98 to XP. Everytime I turn on my computer, somebody has changed something somewhere, and its like having to relearn computers every day.
Everyone hates Windows, yet, if you were ever on a campus where the ONE computer in the WHOLE campus took up a whole BUILDING and you had to talk to it in punch cards, you might appreciate what Windows actually accomplished beside getting all of us to pay to be their test subjects.
@Yukoner, Windows machines should be overwritten with a real OS. For instance http://fedoraproject.org or http://ubuntu.com
For the timid, I recommend buying a new hard drive (~$50), and installing the new OS on that. Keep the old drive as a security blanket.
Reinstalling Windows with a complete overwrite (you did create that CD, didn’t you?) will also work, but with all the time you’ll spend updating back to current levels, you might as well try something new.
@Stuart Gathman, what CD? When I read the instructions (I always read the instructions - I enjoy reading), I tried to create a backup copy of Windows, but I kept getting error messages. And my computer came with Windows loaded on the hard drive, no CD.
And if you try to argue with the salesman, you get nowhere, because all he knows about is how to get you to spend your money…
sigh
What’s really frustrating is seeing the name of a README file about some piece of system software you’re trying to understand, and when you try to read that file, it tells you to go to the root directory on “the backup disk that came with the computer”.
@freeholder1 that’s funny, “everyone hates Windows” when it’s 95% of the market!
@Stuart Gathman I agree about Windows’ status as being a “so-called” OS. Fedora and Ubuntu aren’t quite ready for prime time – close, but no cigar, not yet.
@RinaFarina if you can’t backup your whole system to a re-installation CD, you must at least backup all of your important documents and data. Don’t try to close the barn door after the horses have already booked a flight to Rio de Janeiro.
@N7326 Foxtrot one does get tired of “necessary” changes.
I’m waiting to hear about this scenario:
Windows needs permission to install updates [Y/N]
OK, Yes. [click]
Java needs permission to update your system [Y/N]
Yes, yes, of course. [click]
Adobe needs permission to make changes [Y/N]
SIGH, yes, go ahead. [click]
ILUVU Virus need permision too update sistim [Y/N]
Oh I see! Broomie is a genius! Since everything Gaylord does only causes the virus to spread, the only solution is to implement her idea before he has a chance to react to any suggestions!
That is the most potent - and probably the most deserved - ZAP! I’ve ever seen her deliver.
OK, I have two laptops, one downgraded W7 to WXP, the other on W7. W7 is not half bad. WXP at least lets me run a lot of legacy programs which I still need and use.
Next time, I’m still getting a Mac that can also emulate Windows. Why can’t all computers do that?
(P.S.: I’m old enough to remember those giant computers fed by punch cards.)

Some of my old computers deserved to die like that. At least I felt that way at the time.

Broomie must’ve gotten a job at Microsoft to get people to finally dump Windows XP.

That should be the fate of all Windows machines.
