The Meaning of Lila by John Forgetta and L.A. Rose for February 18, 2015

My MIL and FIL were at each other tooth and nail whenever I saw them … except, of course, for the times my FIL didn’t want to deal with the world and went out into his little backyard trailer with his buds Jim, Johnnie, and Jack; but I digress. He died of a heart attack before my wife and I reached our second anniversary. We got to the hospital as soon as we could and entered the ER where he’d been taken just in time to hear her say, “Come back here, you sunuvabitch!” About four years after he died, she said to me, out of nowhere, apropos of nothing (as an old song says), “I’m tired, I miss [name], I wanna go home.” I knew exactly what she meant by that; and with three children, a grandson with a family, and two great-grandchildren to live for, the meaning was a little ominous. Four years later, she was gone. I hope they’re happy together: Despite the relationship that was more Simpsons than Cleavers, there was a tremendous amount of affection. You had to look hard for it sometimes; but it was there. Apparently, just like Lila’s parents.
