Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for March 08, 2015
Transcript:
Arlo says, "So the old farmer says, 'I hate daylight savings time! The extra hour of of sunlight is burning up my crops!" Janis says, "What crops would we have in early March?" Arlo says, "What crops... It's a joke!" Janis says, "I'll bet it wasn't a joke to the poor farmer!" Arlo says, "But there isn't really an extra hour of daylight!" Janis says, "It's been my experience farmers are smarter than that!" Arlo says, "It's true! Women don't understand humor!"

With that cat with canary feather in mouth look, she has been pulling both his legs at the same time and tying them in a sailor knot.

Since we get an extra day every four years, why not put it in June instead of February so we can enjoy it?

Daylight saving time was invented for factory owners. Gave them extra time before they had to provide artificial illumination for the workers, which cost them money.

Down with DS Time!
Dani Rice almost 10 years ago
Actually, I’d like to see Daylight Savings time all year round as a safety factor. Workers wouldn’t be coming home in the dark all winter, which would cut down on accidents and personal attacks.

Think we all ought to be on Greenwich Median Time. Less confusion in scheduling calls and meetings.
grainpaw almost 10 years ago
Now that there is more Daylight Savings Time in a year than Standard Time, Standard Time is sub-standard.

We ought to do away with DST altogether. It never had anything to do with farmers—it was all about benefitting businessmen, but it screws regular people. It’s stupid and unnecessary.
And yes, Janis is messing with Arlo—check out that smile in the last panel.

Oh they understand. It’s just that they understand torment better.

The farmers disliked daylight savings time because they lose the morning light they needed to get food to the city before the markets opened.

While I’m not a fan of changing the clocks twice/year; it really doesn’t matter whether we settle on DST or standard, you can always adjust your schedule. The nice thing about standard time is that it evenly (sort-of) divides the globe in 24 zones.
I like jbmlaw’s idea to just use GMT globally.

A farmer said to his neighbor “have you noticed that the outside row of corn doesn’t get as big as the rest?”. His neighbor replied “I did, so I’m not going to plant an outside row this year”.

I have my hair cut twice a year on Daylight Savings Time. I tell my kids (and co-workers) that I loose my hair every time I time travel.

In the midst of the oil shortage crisis in the 70’s, we had DST year round. Kids were going to school in the dark and dying because of accidents. The obvious solution would have been to start school an hour later, but it would then end an hour later, messing up schedules.

No, Arlo, Janis just doesn’t follow you. She’s leading you… on.

I love daylight time, in the summer we have daylight until 10 PM.

Now that I am retired and have no place I need to be at any set time… I leave my clocks on Summer Time all year long.

My recommendation is that we get serious about this DST – and instead of changing twice a year, we change twice a DAY. go to work on Standard time, come home on DST!

DST has gotten more ridiculous as time goes on. Let’s stay on Standard Time, and any organization or group that feels a schedule adjustment is necessary can do so on their own without disrupting everyone else. It’s bad enough as it is to reset clocks after a power outage. I worked night shift off and on for ten years over a 20 year period, and I have never fully recovered to what is considered normal. Not that I was normal to start with, but night shift didn’t help matters.

Just keep the clocks where they are and change 9-5 working hours to 8-4 when useful.

So why are the farmers all griping? I agree with Dani Rice. I used to arrive at work just as the sun was coming up and leave just as it was going down. At least with DST, I can have some time in the evening that is still light. As for the kiddies in the morning — an awful lot of kids are going to school around 6:00 in the morning these days to accommodate their parents work schedules — so what difference does it make?

DST haters are simply unfortunate enough to live in the lower latitudes where the days don’t change from one part of the year to the next. Up here, where seasons are really seasons, it’s wonderful to have those nice loooong evenings. Getting over the shift? I never understand the problem. I used to sleep in on weekends when I was a kid and I never went loopy because I ‘lost’ 4 hours of daylight.
