Rip Haywire by Dan Thompson for April 05, 2015
Transcript:
"I've been an admirer of Dan Thompson's great comic for years. Rip Haywire and The Curse of Tangaroa confirms what I already knew- Dan is the real deal! -Mark Tatulli (Lio and Heart of the City) "Rip Haywire rekindles the rare art of humorous adventure comic strips not seen since the glory days of Elzie Segar's 'Thimble Theater' and Roy Crane's 'Wash Tubbs.' Equal doses laughs and thrills, and spotted with more outrageous similes than a Dalmatian with acne, this is sure-handed cartooning at it's best. for those already familiar with Rip's daily exploits, 'The Curse of Tangaroa!' Gives Thompson a chance to stretch out his art and a story in a roomy 100-page graphic novel where an ancient tiki curse ties into Rip's secret past, giving us a peek at some backstory. For those about to discover Rip Haywire for the first time, you're in for a real treat. And for those who still doubt the charms of Haywire, his faithful dog TNT, and his girlfriend/arch-enemy Cobra, well, as the soldier of Fortune himself says in these pages, "Shut up they're awesome." -Jay Stephens (Secret Sundays, Oh Brother!) "Derring-do is in short supply on the comics pages these days and square-jawed heroes are scarce. I'm glad we have Rip Haywire, who's square jaw almost overwhelms his head, and that he's got the luscious Cobra and the bewildered TNT with him. In the Curse of Tangaroa, their adventures are far-flung and far-fetched, with weird flashbacks that lurch into other strips entirely, including one like Peanuts but with explosions. Dan Thompson's loving satire of the classic adventure strip is a demented delight." -Richard Thompson (Cul De Sac, and Richard's Poor Almanac) Rip Haywire and the Curse of Tangaroa! Rip Haywire is a soldier of fortune, a brave, square-jawed man of honor who lives for danger. An old school comic-strip hero, Haywire now brings his huge chin, iron fists and manly metaphors to the big-time pages of a blockbuster graphic novel. With more space for swashbuckling. Rip's adventures now include an ancient curse, cranky ghosts, snooty mercenaries and totally gross pirates! With his venomous on-again/off-again girlfriend, Cobra, and his cowardly yet faithful dog, TNT, by his side, can Rip unravel the deadly secrets of a lost treasure and his own mysterious past? Will he finally get his mother off his back? How much stuff can Team Haywire blow up before its insurance premiums go through the roof? Find out in this super-sized with a side of danger surf and turf extravaganza!
