It’s absolutely true that calling a thug a gangsta is “almost right.”
Whether “almost” is nit-picking, or missing by a mile, would depend on your own personal context. Here in NYC, there’s a world of difference, mainly in that gangstas achieve (rap, women, drugs, money, power, whatever) and thugs don’t.
In other cities, or outside cities, I have no idea.
Jason’s pretty pathetic - he really is at most a thug in prep’s clothing … and to really insult him, a “thug wannabe.”

Yep, “thug” is a good adjective. He’s too unpopular and disorganized to be in a gang.
