It’s going toward not adding Tad and a baby as regular characters. They’ve already added Annie, that’s the only kid they need. Lila will end up as Annie’s nanny, ending her unemployment. Annie’s being adopted by Dr. Fine, which was Fran Drescher’s last name on “The Nanny”
I’m glad to see the strip moving away from lila being completely shallow and sitting on her couch w her cat. It’s been moving in a good direction since anna was introduced. I appreciate that it took time to get to this point in the story – the strip didn’t suddenly become something else over night.
I called it! The next reset button to push is to get rid of Tad. Finding out he was having an affair while Drew was losing the baby (as Jay suggested) ought to do it. Then everything gets back to normal, except for the character development that happened (I presume Drew will be realizing who her true friends were and perhaps gaining a little humility and empathy). Lila has already got some depth she didn’t have before (and sorely needed). Now I wonder what John is going to do with Boyd? Back to school? Boyd gets an MBA? Or maybe a masters in social work?
We could hope shes dreaming.
D@rn.
This is like Curtis Mom was preggers, then before giving birth she was beat up trying to save her boy from a mugger and lost the baby.
So sad for Drew and Lila and Boyd are showing depth and compassion. John is turning up the emotion on this strip. I feel sorry for the miscarrige but the strip may be really better for it.
Although it is so sad, I am glad this story line has been introduced. It does give needed depth.
I also agree with JimmyManners comment about not wanting to add the regular characters of Tad & a baby.
I think what really happening here is that with the newspaper industry strugling, so are comix artists. We’ve seen a few fold recently. Forgetta & Rose are fishing deeper for audience. Lila was light & cute, but in danger of dropping off in an alcaholic funk.
@MamaTaney et al — remember tho’ that Tad _is_ a regular character (tho’ not so often seen) … and he’s Drew’s legal husband, so getting rid of him won’t be nearly as easy — unless that’s who she was texting & they had simultaneous accidents he’ll be around for a while & even more involved.
If he gets there before Drew is fully awake (or he does & makes up a good excuse) she’ll stick by him especially now… Which could be the root of the next long term storyline (it sort of is already anyway).
@jimmymanners …or maybe we’ll be meeting Dr Howard …

We are now entering Funky Winkerbean crossover territory.
Maybe this will open up a change of plans for Annie’s adoption.

With no baby in the picture, it will be easy for Drew to leave Tad after she finds out he was with another woman during this crisis…

Agreed. It’s good to see Boyd and Lila a little less shallow, in the last panel.

Man- this really made me sad. Almost as if they are real people.
Guess that means you guys have a top quality comic now! One of the very few that makes you really feel for the characters in it.
You guys are up there with For Better or for Worse and Blondie now.
Looking forward to seeing your continued work.
Just please - not so sad. At least not very often.
-Paul

True. Drunkenness has a very limited comic potential.
