One of the greatest inventions of the West to have been accepted by the various cultures of the East is punctuation.

Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc., never had the equivalent, but now they all use Western punctuation (although the Japanese make the period a small circle to keep it from getting lost).

So that said, I wonder if those same Eastern cultures have also adopted “air quotes”? Anyone here know?

pschearer - modern Hebrew also picked up punctuation (something I learn to appreciate greatly when using older, unpunctuated (or very sparingly punctuated) texts).

In Israel, we sometimes use air quotes, and even air guitars… :)

“The Hat guy” would be more appropriate.

I remember when a guy broke up a session of the British Parliament one time by referring to Margaret Thatcher as “Attila the Hen”

(Don’t know why I thought of that, but I did.)

Anybody who uses hand-to-hand weapons would know that horned helmets are a bad idea.

Who invented the word “Unquote” and have we tarred and feathered him yet?

Looked it up. e e cummings 1935 Now there’s a guy I want to learn punctuation from. How about “end of quote.”

I guess he was one of those guys who actually worried about art over convention, Lew. He was certainly more brave than me.

Convention is most useful but when you look at how we came up with some of our conventions, you have to seriously wonder why we hold on to them so tenaciously.
