Comics are governed by the laws of cartoon physics — which, apparently, allow “noise cancelling” headphones to mute speech. ~In the universe most readers inhabit, “noise cancelling” headphones have little effect on speech. (They do work well on repetitive noise, such as the roar of engines on an airliner.) OTOH, “noise isolating” headphones can make it difficult to hear speech. ~If you’re taking a plane trip, and want to eliminate most noise, yet still be able to hear your seat mates, or the filght attendants; use noise-cancelling headphones. If you don’t want to hear anything (or at least to hear a lot less of anything), wear noise-isolating headphones. ~There are also combination headphones — which combine (active) noise-cancellation and (passive) noise-isolation. These might do what our cartoon hero wants them to do.
