They are far more likely to be hit in that position than if they actually looked at the ball. At least if you see the ball you have a chance of leaping out of the way!
oh me, my first lesson in batting many decades ago—ball was softly thrown right at me, I closed my eyes, and got hit.I still remember the coach saying WATCH the ball and then you can get out of the way! It did teach me to watch the pitched ball.
