There was, a long, long time ago, a science fiction short story with a not totally dissimilar theme. It was called “The Katzenjammer Effect” – nicely written with a touch pf pathos.
If you can ever find it, try it. You may like it.

Kinda rings true for some of us religious types. A single witness – or at most a small handful – to something unbelievable is charged with convincing everyone else that it really happened. The first challenge is to have the right qualities (clout, integrity, charisma, etc., and preferably a healthy dose of several) to be credible at all. The second and infinitely harder one is for the succession of leaders thereafter to stick to the original message, rather than exploiting followers to serve personal agendas, grievances, prejudice, or just plain odd quirks. And woe be to later messengers who come attempting to correct an established tradition of wayward dogma.
