Frazz by Jef Mallett for June 07, 2015
Transcript:
Spring has its heralds in Opening Day, in potholes and robins and Paris-Roubaix. Frogs announce summer but not quite as well, nor lemonade, bugs or that thunderstorm smell. No, nothing says summer, not clearer, not sweeter than Mom buying Extra Strength Grass Stain Pre-Treater. GIANT WAY Frazz: Oh, you've definitely written a potential hit. Caulfield: I don't know what paris-roubaix is, but I know you go on and on about it.

The Paris-Roubaix race is not the Tour de France. It is held in April, is ~158 miles long, and is known for having 28 sections of cobblestone that make it one of the toughest professional cycling races. It starts just north of Paris and ends in Roubaix.

Only Jeff Mallet would mention the Paris-Roubaix as a sign of spring. I LOVE IT! It’s also nice that it rhymes… ;-)
Of course if you Anglicize the pronunciation it doesn’t work. When I was a kid I saw a car at a stoplight next to us and my mother asked what kind it was. I read the name off the name emblem and said it was a “Gran Prix” – only I pronounced it “grand pricks”. I couldn’t figure out why my dad was laughing so hard.

You’re an inventive poet and a funnyman, Jef. Love the coloring today (faded lined yellow pad and perfect grass stains, if there is such a thing) and the minimalist outlines. You’re conveyed exhilaration in Caulfield’s jump. This comic is great. But then I love everything you do, so why not?

Don’t know why so many snide responses to what I perceived to be an endearingly off-hand humanity-oriented comment. Some people just want to be contentious, I guess. I enjoyed the irony of your comment and just the sheer friendly fun. As we all say these days, “Haters gonna hate.”

Are you really from New York, or are you just trying to give folks from that city a bad name? I haven’t posted to this strip for some time, but I have been reading the comments all along. I find you an interesting sort. Keep jabbering, and soon you’ll reveal yourself entirely. The tirades today have started the revelation. BTW, I don’t think Big Puma is the least bit interested in your trying to constantly suck up to him. He’s very bright, and I suspect he pretty much has you figured out by now. Your eagerness to latch on to the more well-informed posters here is very telling.

Love your comment. And I agree wholeheartedly!

Good luck to you, Scoonz. I’m from NYC as well. Btw, people have been using that phrase for at least 10 years. No problem. Enjoy your life.

Caulfield just wrote a commercial. Bully for him.
