TV: Ben Affleck demanded that the PBS show "Finding Your Roots" censor its findings. Affleck asked PBS to hide the fact he had a slave-owning ancestor. Curiously, he seemed unconcerned about revealing his other ancestor, Debbie Hitler.
The son of a king is not a king, the son of a slave is not a slave, genealogy is garbage. All men are created equal, we hold these truths to be self evident.
Actually, isn’t it a good sign that Affleck was embarressed by the revelation? I am a direct descendant of Robert E Lee and I am sure as hell embarressed by it.
It seems to me the problem isn’t whether we are embarrassed or not by our ancestors but that we acknowledge what happened AND how our present-day life is affected. In New York, we’re finally dealing with the fact that much of our part of the country was built by slave labor (the nation’s second largest slave market was once on Wall Street). Knowing where you come from, warts and all, can help you plot a more just and equitable future. Pretending it didn’t happen leads to more of the same.
A lot of the guests on that show had slave-owner ancestry, including some of the African-Americans. In many, if not all of the cases, the guests are usually shaken by the knowledge.

Most of the Hitlers were decent hard-working people, who had their name spoiled by one colossal asshole.

Ever since the internet has become woven into society, it seems that attacks, personal, political and business are very rampant.

All my family are from Mexico. Amongst them are Indian salve owners and Indian slaves.
I am neither proud or ashamed of them. I am responsible for my actions not the actions of those before me.
Those who justify their actions because they are Mexican,. Black, Spanish, Italian, German, English etc are racist.

Don’t want the sins of our ancestors, but a chunk of change is different. Kind of like their Constitution, too.

“I know I have at least one ancestor who was an officer in the Confederate army.”.What would that have to do with you?
