“So” as a sentence starter is everywhere these days. Don’t know why we picked up that verbal hiccup, but I bet we have it for a few more years.
I listen to NPR and a lot of the guests start almost every sentence with “So”. It’s annoying. To me, anyway.
“So”, as a sentence starter, has a long tradition. You’ll notice Seamus Heaney starts his translation of Beowulf with “So”. It may be more common in the vernacular now than it was a decade ago, but it’s nothing new.
So what?
Well. He’s an old so and so.
There is a Beany and Cecil cartoon that featured, “So what and the Seven What Nots”.
