Actually, according to the myth, god told us to work six days, and spend one day resting like he did. In other words, since the “sabbath” was turned into obligatory religious ritual, there was no time for the working class to have for themselves—which, of course, was the goal all along.It’s modern secularism that has given us the five-day work week (as well as shortening the work day to eight hours, paid vacations, sick leave, and the abolition of child labor).
