Oddly, ‘The Billiken’ is also the name of the final new character ever introduced by Charles Dickens. She was a landlady in THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD, which was published in 1870. She refused to advertise under a name that would reveal her status as a widowed woman- lest she be taken advantage of by the unscrupulous. So she is referred to in the book as ‘The Billiken.’ Coincidence???

The Billikin appears in the anime series “Locodol”. Apparently “Billiken-sama” became quite popular in Japan after WWII.
