Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for June 12, 2015
June 11, 2015
June 13, 2015
Transcript:
Calvin: "Wow, look at this bug go! What on earth would make a bug hurry?"
Calvin: "You're deluding yourself, stupid! Nothing you do is important! You're just a bug!"
Calvin: "Oh my gosh, look at the time!"
Calvin’s magic watch appears in panel three. He doesn’t have one in the first two panels. In the fourth panel, Bill Watterson conveys a feeling of speed by simply showing Calvin’s leg, the shadow under it, and a few specs of dust.

In the Peanuts strips above, Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and Linus all go rushing off to the right. This is typical in comic strips because the characters run in the direction of the flow of the panels, from left to right. However, in today’s Calvin and Hobbes, Calvin rushes off to the left. If he had gone to the right, it would seem like he might have stepped on the little bug.
Arthropods are probably the first phylum of animals more complex than an earthworm that came up on the land and survived. Insects are probably the first distinct order that evolved entirely on land.
But sea life is hundreds of millions of years older than land-living lifeforms.

Calvin seems to have the same fascination that Lucy Van Pelt seemed to have with bugs.
