Got that a lot for my ex-BF: he was a long-distance truck driver and rarely in town, so I just contacted his local unit and they would take care of the summons. The one time he was able to appear, he ended up not serving as I had made a dental appointment for him/her months before our wedding, and I wrote on the summons: “I have put up with his bad teeth for the last (many) years. Please allow me a chance to get married and not throw up at my nuptials.” They actually granted him a 6 month delay.
Jokes sort of on me – once his teeth were fixed (and they did look good!), he ran off with some (redacted adjective redacted noun) he was cheating on me with for several years. (I had my suspicions but not enough to proved anything.)
Jokes on him: he called six years later for the boxes I had been storing for him. They were legally gone a month after he left and did not pay storage fees.
Further joke: the redacted one and the his company dropped him for not having a valid license: it seems he never put in a change of address form, so all of the in- and out-of- state speeding and parking notices never got to him. I had nowhere to send them except to ’NOT AT THIS ADDRESS".
To all of who you drive the US and Canada highways – be thankful this idiot is not a menace on the roads. Start worrying in about 5 years regarding good behavior…….
I was called twice, the first time I went through the selection process but was never called (all the cases I was scheduled for were settled out of court). The second time was for the Detroit courts (I live in Ypsilanti) and since I didn’t have transportation and have medical problems (including using a walker) I let them know that I couldn’t serve in Detroit but would be happy to serve in Ypsi or Ann Arbor if they could transfer the summons. They released me from service.
Dani Rice: Even though I have a statutory excuse (age), I show up anyway. Honesty has nothing to do with it. I am never chosen, probably because of my habit in voir dire of quoting the Constitution when asked if I could decide something against it (either side, doesn’t matter). At least I made them use up a peremptory challenge.
I was only called once, and I was old enough to opt out for age, and did so. I would have been happy to serve during my working years, since my employer paid for my time on Jury Duty. Never got called then.
I’ve been summoned twice; and neither time was the summons point-blank like this appears to be. The first time I sent a notice that the date of the duty interfered with finals in college; apparently, that was good enough for the court, as they never sent the deputies around looking for me. The second time I got one of those summonses where they tell you to call a number the night before the date to see if you’re needed. I wasn’t. So I’ve never had to sit on a jury.OTOH, a former coworker, a recently naturalized citizen, was excited to sit on a jury. He figured it was part of the American experience; and he wanted to experience it all. So he did his bit in a local court on a petit jury. Not long after that, he was summoned to sit on a federal grand jury. Not realizing that the two jurisdictions don’t talk to one another about things, he complained, “I just got off a jury! Why do they want me to sit on another one!?” “Yep,” I told him, “you’re an American!”

Explain your situation, that you have travel plans, and they will reschedule.

I’ve never had a jury duty summons for “next week.” It’s always months ahead of the date.

Only been called once. Sat around and read a book all day, and was sent home early. Hubby has served twice. He must have a honest face.
