Norman: I can't remember how it's supposed to go... Does the paper hang over or under? Who cares? Even if I get it wrong, what's the worst that could happen?
Ralph: All right, who put on the new roll?
I had a former housemate who was rabidly anal about how the paper hung. I deliberately would never replace it the “right way” if I could not avoid changing it, (5 times in 7 years, and I’m proud of my sloth in this case)
Earlier this year I saw, online, the original patent papers (late 1800’s) of toilet paper. The inventor showed it rolling forward over the top. Question answered, discussion closed.lol
Either way is “over the top” and any determined cat can unroll it. If a tile wall, you are almost guaranteed a premoistened tissue from the back unless you are in a desert.
Let’s think about this for a minute here — how did Ralph get his pants up over the TP? And it stayed over his face and around his leg from the bathroom to the den?
I saw a “personality quiz” one time with a couple of questions about TP.The first TP question was, “Do you ever get annoyed when someone in your house hangs the toilet paper the wrong way and change it?”The next question was, “Do you ever find toilet paper hanging the wrong way and change it — someone ELSE’S house?”I’ve since incorporated the questions into some of my “new group icebreakers,” and get many bashful tentative hand raises with sheepish expressions…..
Husband always insisted that tp had to come off over the top. I never thought about it, but if it mattered to him it was no big deal to do it that way. We have a very small bathroom for our bigger bathroom – no really, I want to put the tp holder recessed in the wall for the space – so since it is not in the wall, I was using a brand new roll and had put it in the other way and could not reach the end of the paper as it was against them wall and I had to reach under my leg and up as the room is so small and one sits so close to the wall.

As long as there is paper when I need it, I don’t care which way it rolls!

I’ve always wondered what consequences there would be if I hung it the other way.I can live with this one.

The original patent shows the paper coming over the top.

I prefer over the top but if you have cats under is better if you don’t want to find a “white cloud” in the bathroom.

Apparantly Ralph pulls his pants up before he uses the tp.

I fabricated a round metal cover that lifts up for paper dispensing; our Brittany can’t seem to get it open, try as he might….

By having a Mommy who always takes care of it for you.

I solved the problem by placing my TP vertically on the bath tub.
