Ernesto: What's wrong with opening a Mexican souvenir business? Eddie: In Arizona the anti-Mexican state?! Ernesto: I could sell mice to eskimos. Eddie: You have some craxy business ideas, pop.
desertdwlr, yeah, I believe you love Hispanic culture, just not Hispanic people. The fact is, it’s all about how a person looks – if they’re brown, check their ID. It doesn’t matter if they’re legal or illegal – and that’s the whole problem with this stupid law. You could be an illegal Canadian, and you’d have no problems in Arizona because, chances are, you’re white.
Oh, and you know who your landscaper hires? You check up on that?
And Obama as socialist? Hah! He proves himself more conservative every day (as some of us knew). Apparently, you don’t even know what “commie” means so can’t be taken seriously.
CDWARD If a cop stops someone in any state or country, the first thing he asks for is ID. “Lawful contact” as there Arizona law states. To clear this conflict, when the police have a sobriety checkpoint, they stop every car. You act like they are only going to stop people of color. It must be nice to be psychic. Or did God tell you this? Where are you getting your information? Did the Arizona State Police issue a bulletin that said Crack down on people who don’t look like WASPs? Did you read it in the very well worded law? Perhaps you heard it from some left wing newsman who you never took the time to check out his credential. I would suggest you buy two subscriptions, on to The Nation and the other to the New Republic. But if you only want to hear one side of the story, and if you are ignorant enough to believe that there is a law that says, “Pick on Brown People”, The Rev Jim Jones just started a commune of Peace and Love in South America.
there are a LOT of latinos in this country who can vote……
and since the alaskan barbie , and hence the repub party endorses the ‘show me your papers’ law……
guess how the next major election will go
be smug, wasp guy, you are only cutting your own thorat
The fine supporters of this type of law would have LOVED the Aryan supremacy legislation of a certain European nation in the
’30s. There were plenty of fans here and elsewhere who found
them ideal.
Oh, BTW, ‘there’ is not ‘their’ nor ‘they’re’. Basic ed was skipped by these guys in order to get right to the propaganda.
@lewreader: First, a small point: the original house and senate bills in AZ did not include the anti-profiling language. Second, the law is, IMO, pretty badly written in that there is no definition of reasonable cause. Third, there are a lot of jurisdictions in AZ, that are opposed to the law, which incidentally requires the jurisdiction to indemnify officers for wrongful arrest/detention actions. The section on employing and abetting illegal aliens may be reasonable. The rest is scary. I understand the problem, but this doesn’t look like a reasonable solution to me.
You might want to check out the article in yesterday’s “Republic” to see how a variety of people think the law might work in application.
Sell MICE? to Eskimos? Apparently there are a lot of mice on the tundra (wolves eat a whole lot of them) but there is probably more ICE. Whoops! May not be much longer!
Nighthawks you are off base. The LEGAL Latinos who stood in line to come to the USA are also standing against the their illegal brethren jumping in front of those who would enter LEGALLY. The “La Cucaracha ” comic strip belongs on the editorial page , not with the funnies. If Lalo Alcaraz has a political statement to make he shouldn’t polute the comics with not funny innuendo.
As for the Arizona immigration law, it does not racially profile Latinos. By federal law, aliens must carry their identification papers and present them when asked. The Arizona police must have legal cause to stop anyone, before asking for I.D.
The problem lies in the “probable cause”. What would cause a person to suspect a person is an illegal alien? I for one am not going to carry ANY papers to AZ. I am a citizen and I am not travelling internationally so why should I have to carry either a passport or birth certificate? To all the backers of this law, what does an illegal alien look like? Any of us could be arrested for not having proper papers. I would go along with the idea AZ was trying to protect their borders but when they also passed legislation preventing a person with an accent from teaching English and banning ethnic studies AND inviting Palin to support the law this is all about racism, period.
