Yes,Japanese Family ties are the next best thing to Unbreakable. It can go either way, though..Years ago, I knew a Japanese couple where the Husband was a professional Singer. He was touring in the US and the Caribbean mostly. One afternoon someone asked his wife if she missed living in Japan. She said No in the Least. In fact, She was the one who Booked most of his gigs. She said the point of travelling so much was that He was the Oldest Son and, in Japan, the Oldest son’s Wife was expected to “Care” for her Mother in Law. Which meant that, if they stayed in Japan, they would have to Live with the MIL who was taking as much advantage of “Japanese Tradition” as possible.Essentially, if they were “Home” she was the MIL’s personal Servant. She said that the MIL considered their marriage “Beneath” her son and lost no opportunity to demonstrate her dislike. So, they spent as much time as possible as Far away from Japan as she could find Singing Jobs.
ie ie, doumo.Actually, having the pass was a godsend in that every station between Kawasaki and Akihabara was free. I used to ride the trains a lot on my off-days when I could choose times when the cars weren’t crowded, and the pass saved me a few hundred dollars a month.
The real secret behind the Free Passes on Japanese trains is that the Train Corporation also owns most of the Shopping areas around the stations..Free Ride to Their Mall. They make a Lot of money from those stores. Often, more than they make running the Trains..

Nope, regular pass, with three transfers, and having to go through Shinjuku station both ways every day.
