It’s called batik, and it dates from no later than the 8th century, possibly much farther back in Peru and Africa. The Dead are real old, but not quite that old.
Grateful dead was mid 60s, didn’t become really popular till a few years later. Tie-die was early 60’s, possible late 50s on the coasts. Shame you young folks don’t know all this important stuff.

I think polka dot tie-dye dates back to Lawrence Welk.

I read of a guy in Bangkok who fell into a vat of coloring. He was Thai dyed.
