We didn’t Need “Camp” when I was a kid.We lived a 5 minute Walk from the city Pool and, since my father worked for the City Recreation Department, we got in Free..Every morning in the summer, the first words out of my mother’s mouth were:“Why don’t you kids go spend the day at the Pool?”.Halfway to the Pool was the “Children’s Museum” featuring science lectures by the science teachers from the city’s High Schools. They had Snakes. They had Bugs. They had Florescent Rocks. They had Fossils. They had Chemicals that fizzed, changed colors, grew “snakes” of ashes as they burned, smoked in strange colors and sometimes went “Bang!”….
So you had a lot of people, in a controlled environment, entertaining and watching you. Camp in the city. We usually played at the river or out in the woods. We saw adults when we came home to eat and sleep.
