I use the thump method. Thump the melon with your knuckle. The more hollow the melon sounds, the riper it is. Works every time! If nothing else, you’ll at least get the ripest melon in the group that you’ve thumped.
I tap them with the bottom “side” of my thumb. Do this:Give a “thumbs up”. Turn your hand so your thumb is parallel to the table, palm down. Tap the table with it, hard enough to hear it well, but not so hard you hurt yourself. Now to the watermelon. What you want to hear is a dull thud, not a ring like you get from a basketball. The flesh of an unripe melon is stiffer than that of a ripe one. It carries sound better and has a distinct “ping” to it that a ripe one doesn’t.
Tune in later and I’ll tell you how to choose a ripe cantaloupe.

The produce clerk would appreciate it if you didn’t drop, smack, scratch, or otherwise damage the merchandise.

Put your ear to it? Mr. Whipple won’t allow you to squeeze it.

Cut it. That always works.

If you break it, you buy it . . . whether it’s ripe or not!
