Transcript:
Phoebe: Mom! She's MY unicorn!
Marigold: Unicorns do not belong to anyone.
Phoebe: But you're cool, and stuff moms like is NEVER cool.
Mom: I like YOU too, sweetie.
Phoebe: Mo-oooom! My CRED!!
Hmmm….where to begin. 1. Portia was a female attorney in Shapespeare’s Elizabethan-age (late 1500s to early 1600s) play, “The Merchant of Venice” and is therefore considered a female icon; 2. you do know that that’s NOT how the car’s name is spelled, right?; 3. Phoebe has talked about “cred” before because she’s bedeviled by Dakota; and 4. although you say “nothing wrong with that” in regard to the cred you describe, why does it sound like a dis?

Right now, the only people who know or care about your “cred” are your parents and Marigold…meaning you don’t have any.

You’re a bit too young to be Jeremy Duncan yet, Phoebe

Considering your geekiness with the spelling-bee, you never had any cred to begin with Phoebe.

Panel two sorta contradicts the strip’s new (syndicate-imposed?) title. Dana making a sly comment?

My mom liked a lot of stuff that was considered “cool.” She was a cool mom.

If you’re a Greener, Mom’s got cred just because she’s wearing all black to paint in. Goth chicks forever!

I think you’re pretty cool, Phoebe’s mom. And it’s not just because you’re a sly caricature of a certain artist..

“(…)or a girl called Portia (who’d name a kid after a car?)”
The girl’s name: Portia
The car’s name: Porsche (After Dr. Ing. h.c. [“Doktor Ingenieur Honoris Causa” = “Doctor of Engineering Honorary degree”] Ferdinand Porsche.)

And finally, friends do not belong to us, Phoebe. They stay because they want to, which is SO much better.
