I accept that Calvin has an advanced vocabulary, but I find it difficult to believe he knows the word "weltanschauung’. but then again, that’s just me.
Welt·an·schau·ung
noun
a particular philosophy or view of life; the worldview of an individual or group.

I agree with the critic in the movie Manhattan who said that a certain sculpture had “a certain negative utility.”

This is hilarious. I made that exact misspelling in grad school once. I’m not a German speaker and I thought I could show off by using the word. Didn’t work, as the prof pointed out: “If you use weltanschauung in a paper, you have to spell it right.” In a deep-South accent that made the whole thing even more ridiculous.

Prey tell, how would Hobbes, a mere stuffed animal, know that “weltanschauung” was misspelled?
Weltanschauung |ˈvɛltˌanʃaʊʊŋ| noun (pl.Weltanschauungen |-(ə)n| ) a particular philosophy or view of life; the world view of an individual or group.ORIGIN German, from Welt ‘world’ + Anschauung ‘perception’.

Today, Calvin is working on how to communicate his art. Here at Calvin and Hobbes, we spend a lot of time working on the art of communication.

Jag har absolut ingen aning vad vissa av er pratar om! Jag kommer att vara mycket upptagen med min Websters ordbok och Encyclopedia Britannica för nästa flera timmar, så jag får se dig senare i eftermiddag!

Apophenia: who defined it as the “unmotivated seeing of connections” accompanied by a “specific experience of an abnormal meaningfulness”. Apophenia has come to imply a universal human tendency to seek patterns in random information, such as gambling.
Translation: “I don’t see it and you don’t see it either.”
What ever.
But I can understand it considering how some theists insist on forcing their experience and beliefs on atheists.

There was a commentor called “margueritm”. She/he wrote here for a long time, but suddenly I heared nothing more from her/him. Does someone know what has happened with her/him?

The first two panels are absolutely true. Faux sophisticates who think they know better than everyone else look down their noses at us poor fools.

Must I just flag every twit (nods toward Gaijinrabbit – I recognized that you were just having a little fun) in today’s board?
QuiteDragon over 9 years ago
What you should most understand about that word in today’s context is that it is not polite, nor is it something that should be used around children (here) when it can’t be fully explained to them the meaning, context, and usage (arguably, none).

What does “weltanschauung” even mean?
neverenoughgold over 9 years ago
What I said earlier, “I have absolutely no idea what some of you are talking about! I will be very busy with my Webster’s dictionary and Encyclopedia Britannica for the next several hours, so I’ll see you later this afternoon!”
and I am still confused, but nothing out of the ordinary…

@LX013: Margueritem was one of the very first regular Calvin and Hobbes posters. I heard that she has cut back on her computer time to do other things that she enjoys during her retirement, like bike riding. Here is her profile with her ten most recent comments. Her latest postings were 3-4 months ago on other comic strips. You can see that she posted Easter egg pictures this year, like she has done in the past.Click here: Margueritem’s GoComics Profile

@rgcviper: It was fun to see Margueritem’s postings back when she was the first Calvin and Hobbes poster nearly every day. I see from her profile that she has posted more than 44,000 times. I’m not even up to 3,000 yet. I think she really enjoyed being the first poster each day, but I remember her saying that it was becoming harder for her to stay awake that late every night.

I do not know German, have never taken a German class, but from my studies of theology, philosophy, and literature have encountered and learned every one of the terms that Gaijinrabbit cited above. His use was plainly humorous and playful. Any secure individual should have realized that and not felt threatened into name calling and vulgarity. Besides, kiddos, I’ll bet you know some big words too. “Mayonnaise” for example?
