Transcript:
Calvin: "Another thing to remember about popular culture is that today's tv-reared audience is hip and sophisticated. This stuff doesn't affect us" Calvin: "We can separate fact from fiction. We understand satire and irony. We're detached and jaded viewers who aren't influenced by what we watch" Hobbes: "I think I hear advertisers laughing" Calvin: "Hold on, I need to inflate my basketball shoes"

Oops, when I read 8 my mind plugged in GRAVY and I thought ‘how ridiculous, of course gravy is a necessity’. :-)

Then there are those who are subtly influenced by reading the comics every day. Over time, some of us may have trouble distinguishing ourselves from comic strip characters.

I dumped my tv when I started my studies. I felt it just dumbed me down. Never bought a new one, but, disturbingly, the internet now starts to have the same effect as the tv back then and it’s much more difficult / impossible to live without internet access.

@Kristiann: With TV in the past, you didn’t have control over when good programming would be available. But with the Internet, you can always choose something that is intellectually stimulating and avoid being “dumbed-down.”

Though the kids deny it I don’t believe it’s just a coincidence that movies like Hunger Games (and so many girls crushing on Peeta/Josh Hutcherson, including my girl who had gotten a poster of him) and Brave came out along with some less popular shows and movies they were watching.
Isn’t “Hunger Games” a film about competitive eating?

Well, that certainly explains why “Reality Shows” are so Popular!

For the past few years I’ve wished for less gravity. Gravity is cruel.

Love your story! I was hoping Dancing With The Stars was going to create a whole new generation of dancers. Instead it created a whole new generation of people who watch dancing on tv.
Also, regarding the White House… I think I remember many instances of that, and across many administrations!

It’s weird how Calvin takes this kind of stuff seriously and yet messes around and misbehaves at school and in front of his parents.Brilliant!xxx

Now isn’t that terrible that the most natural thing that can lead to a family can’t be discussed with family. Do you detect the irony here?
Yes, but not everyone is as open minded as you an I…

I would love to hear Calvin’s opinion on the Internet

I’m actually what Calvin described. Before I got the DVR I would mute the TV and say “Get off the air, advertiser whatever it is you’re trying to sell me, I don’t want any…” Now that I have a DVR, I usually pre-record my shows so I can skip the commercials, which I consider to be a nuisance. The only thing this doesn’t work on is sports events. Regulation routinely exceeds allotted time and if it goes into OT it could exceed allotted time by more than 1 hour. But if I pause it by about 1 hour at the beginning, I usually catch up to live TV by the end of regulation, skipping the commercials. So “IN YOUR FACE!” advertisers.

Thanks for all the info (I think). So based upon your first statement, Hunger Games is about competitive eating?
