Then I was really blessed. Both Mom AND Grandma baked all the time, and it was really, really good. Unfortunately, the demands of modern times make today’s plugger panel the rule, not the exception. so maybe we’re not so modern after all.
To the best of my knowledge, in the last 40 years (my life to date), my mother has purchased a grand total of 1 pie, but she’s baked scores if not hundreds – fortunately she takes after her mother and paternal grandmother in the kitchen (and, oddly but luckily enough, my wife takes after my mom, not my “microwave-queen” MIL).
My mother stopped baking years before she died… which was a pity. Still, at least she taught us how to bake stuff for ourselves (so she didn’t have to).

I could still get pies like Mom used to buy, but there are no Raley’s stores in Georgia.
