Three, – Indian, African and African forest elephant.
There have been claims by Col. Blashford Snell that some type of elephant he saw in Nepal was not like a normal Indian elephant, and also I think there are some pygmy elephants in Congo, but whether these are just a type of forest elephant or not I do not know.Mo Fayed · 9 years ago
JimAs is common now with many animals the taxonomy of the elephant is being reconstructed. Justly so. Separating a species to subspecies based on location is not acceptable in respect to it’s genetics.
In 2004 all African subspecies were dropped in favor of one species, the African elephant, Loxodonta africana.http://www.animalinfo.org/species/loxoaf…
The other species is the Asian elephant, Elephas maximus.http://www.animalinfo.org/species/elepma…
Night-Gaunt49Sub-species always were a problem, even before Watson and Crick showed the nature of DNA. Sub-species can interbreed, so integrades can vary widely in appearance. On the other hand, you left out the GOP elephant, discovered over a century ago by Thomas Nast.
