I believe the phrase “money shot” started innocently in the movie business to refer to a scene that absorbed much of the film’s budget in hopes of making it a hit. Examples would include cast-of-thousands spectacles or expensive advanced special effects scenes.
But as the term later came to be used in pornography, it is now so corrupted that it probably shouldn’t appear in a family comic at all. It’s hard to be sure what Brian Crane’s intention here was.
I had the exact same conclusion, pschearer. Innocently taken, it is not a bad strip at all, quaint and amusing. However, the editor probably should have “just (said) no.”
pschearer: “The money shot” referred to the one shot in a photographer’s roll of film that was worth selling to a newspaper or magazine. Example: the shot of raising the flag on Iwo Jima was only one out of a whole roll of photos taken during the battle and aftermath on Mt. Surabachi (sp?). You almost never see the rest of them.
