Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for August 30, 2015
Transcript:
Phoebe: You can see a lot more stars out here than you can at home. Marigold: Before the humans and their electric light, one could see many more. Some unicorns believed each star was the glow at the end of the horn of a sky unicorn, who was charging directly toward us. However, if they walked around with their horn lights aglow all night, it seemed to keep the invaders at bay. For eons, most unicorns were badly sleep-deprived. It is still known as the ERA of HALLUCINATION. Of course, it is possible they were right, and our doom rushes even closer. Phoebe: Thanks, I needed something to lie awake wondering about.

Well… light is radiation, and if unicorn horns can radiate light… like stars radiate light… Marigold isn’t wrong…

Really, compared to other star, the sun is very tiny!

Wow, the artwork! This some of the best use of light and shading I’ve ever seen in a cartoon. Great job, Dana.

Sadly, unicorns are color-blind, so they didn’t notice the red shift, which means that the sky unicorns are actually leaving.

Beautiful cartoon…I love the use of the blue-black; the beautiful depiction of the night sky; Phoebe enjoying the stars with her friend; Unicorn history; and the GREAT use of font for the Era of Hallucination. Great job, just beautiful!

Does anybody remember how this comic ended the first time around? I do not recall.

The shading, specially on panel 3 is really something on this comic. I love it.

Or so the unicorn-denying scientists would have you believe.

I liked the original version better, personally.

Why these thin lines separating bluish and dark sky in the upper three panels?

Don’t worry Phoebe. The stars are light years away, and due to the expansion of the universe, some probably never will reach our solar system.
