Without Lynn’s notes (provided by M2MM), I would have assumed that John was somewhere ‘behind’ Elly, and he was the one who shouted ‘Free Beer’! Actually, I am still assuming that this is exactly what happened…

It may have also been a nod to the 1955 Looney Tunes episode “One Froggy Evening”, where a man finds a frog who can do vaudeville. In an effort to hype the frog, he rents a theatre. He first puts out a sign that says “Admission: $2”, nothing happens. He then puts out a sign that says “Free Admission”, nothing happens. He then puts out a sign that says “Free Beer”, then a bunch of drunks bullcharge into the theatre! That is one of the harder Looney Tunes cartoons to find as many of the early ones were censored as they were considered “politically incorrect”. The scene about the man putting up a “Free Beer” sign may have doomed that cartoon to censorship as well.

Will we be seeing Sue (Elly’s coworker) again anytime soon?

    She’s cute!

She needs a sign that says “Will beg for art”

The One Froggy Evening scene popped to my mind as well. Here is a somewhat mediocre copy of it, taken from a list of stories bugs is reading to a kid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5DIv0rDx4I (it does cut out the final scene).

The frog, later named Michigan J. Frog (for his rendition of The Michigan Rag, I presume) became the mascot for the WB Network while it was in operation.

Silly me, all this time I thought the “Free Beer” bit was about poor Nick Beer, jailed unfairly in a case of freedom of speech abuse.

I forgot to say that that cartoon was uncensored.
