Sounds like the old SNL ad parody “Chess For Girls”.

Before computer games came along it was hard to learn chess. The person teaching the game always knew all these special moves and loved to beat you in about ten minutes. My best friend and I learned it together, so we both sucked. It was a lot more fun that way. A lot of the new board games are quite complicated, and once again people aren’t willing to take the time to teach them. Thank goodness for Playstation, Nintendo, and X-Box.

I’m a long time game player and you’re right that the rules can be complicated, but when I teach someone a game I try to give them all the rules, including some stratagies that aren’t really part of the rules, but can be important to the game. The thing is that all games (including chess) can be learned quickly, but it takes time and practice to master the strategies.

Just before he entered first grade one of my nephews had a bad reaction to a vacination and ended up on bed rest while he recovered. The neighbor boy decided to teach him how to play checkers and would come over every day to play him. About two weeks after this started my sister heard a shout of victory from her son’s room and went to investigate. In the room she found the neighbor boy (who was 14 or so) doing a victory dance and saying, “I won, I finally won.”
