When I was 14 I was in a production of “Oliver!” I had a solo as a milkmaid in the “Who Will Buy” scene. During the part when Oliver is talking to his foster family, the 4 of us Street Sellers had to stand upstage, perfectly still. I had to stand with my arms outstretched, holding milk buckets. My younger brother, who was 6, was sitting front-row center. There I am, trying to be perfectly still, with my brother yelling, “HIIIII, KARENNNN!!!”, while waving his arms madly!
The streetsweeper at the Cheyenne Frontier Days parades – featuring possibly the world’s largest collection of horse-drawn vehicles – gets a big cheer both times it appears in each parade.
I recall being a reindeer once. I was fine with that, I didn’t want to be on stage anyway. My stutter was still being worked on to suppress it. (Such speech problems never go away, but they can be suppressed.)
