My cousin and her wife live in Saskatchewan. They have winters like this but like most folks up there they had prepared for it. Emergency generator, food, Coleman stoves, 2 – 3 cords of wood in a shed/under a tarp, blankets, etc. If you live in areas like this you should be prepared for things like this to happen.
We have a fireplace like that. The only time we tried to use it, it heated the house nicely until we had to open the doors to let the smoke out. We don’t use it anymore.
