Heck, that’s gender discrimination. There are plenty of traditional cultures in which mothers carry their babies around in backpacks for much of the day, as they work in the fields or around the home or go to fetch water. The kids do just fine… I’ve read that this practice helps with mother-child bonding and is quite comforting to the kids.
If a mother can do it, why can’t a male sibling do it?
Now, if Gordo’s backpack was crammed with sharp-edged schoolbooks, dirty gym gear, or last Thursday’s uneaten lunch (tuna on rye) I could understand Mom’s objection.

Did you put Marley in your backpack to take her for a walk and then and forget that she was in it when you got home?

“I remembered to curl the top flap back so she could see where we had been! Jeez! I’m supposed to remember everything?”
