When I was a kid, we put up actual socks that we actually wore. I never had a fancy, special Christmas Stocking. My feet were so little that, whatever didn’t fit in my stocking just went on the step below it (we didn’t have a fireplace so we hung ours on the bannister).

Probably because those could be stuffed with way more gifts than a traditional stocking ..
