When I was a junior in high school, I ended up with eczema on my eyelids. When I could finally see a little I went back to school. Because my lids were still swollen I could only look down. I did manage to notice a cute new guy in chorus (aided by friends). I walked up to him and said, “I thought I noticed a new pair of shoes in the room!” Unfortunately, he turned out to be gay, but we did become very close friends and singing partners. I was devastated a year later when he committed suicide on the same week we had made a lunch date to get caught up (he was a senior when we met).
