You think we Caucasian heterosexual european descended men do not face discrimination these days? Boy, either you lead a very sheltered life, or else you are blind.
A few years ago I had a female who I was working for tell me that I had to put the company first rather than my family, because she wanted to look better, and if I did not, then she would file discrimination charges against me. (My father had just died and I took off 10 days to travel home and bury him. Charged as vacation none the less…)
I decided right then to sever employment with that company, but first I decided to have a little fun, so I went to personnel and filed harassment charges. This particular person, in a meeting with our personnel manager and a couple vps reiterated her contention, going on to say I was not worth my salary and so forth and so on. The horrified looks on everyone else’s faces made it difficult to not laugh.
In the end, I wound up leaving anyway, as even with a promotion and salary bump, I did not want to stay there.
The personnel manager shared with me some of the company directives - directives which made it almost certain that incompetent women would be promoted over competent men, and that minorities were virtually immune from being fired.
You don’t get much more systematic than that.
None of that is equal to the level of hate directed towards gay men I suppose, but it is still shocking and disturbing to encounter. And there is really no defense against it unless you are as lucky as I was -to have it leveled against you by an idiot with a big mouth.
We won’t even go into the historical discrimination issues, except to say black Americans have little or nothing on Irish, Chinese, and American Indians.
So true, MamaTaney. I’m very happy that many of you are speaking up and giving your opinions about Lila and sharing your life experiences. As you all know, I write the strip to express myself and my self and hopefully to make people laugh. The rest is gravy. It’s good to get this sort of stuff out in the open.
