Perhaps Mai’s grandfather was talking about Karl’s nose (not as high or pointed as some foreigners) and/or that Karl’s eyes were dark brown like Japanese. However, the comments I got in Japan the most were something like: “I didn’t expect an American to be so sensitive.”
Back in 64 when we did a three day layover in Japan, my little one year old brother was the talk of the town, chubby little kid with blonde hair and bright blue eyes….everyone had to stop us to look at him. He looked like a blonde hair blue eyed Buddha.I was tall for my 12 years of age (5’9") but did not have the draw he had.Our hotel was just across the way from the Imperial Palace. Our window faced that direction. It was really nice there, hectic but nice. My favs were the Kabuki, a Sumo match, and the Flintstones voiced in Japanese….Wilma is still Wilma.

I once made a delivery to an Asian lady who was surprised that an American would be such a hard worker. Go fig.

You might also do some research to find out what sort of Japanese Spirits might be identified as having Blonde hair or Blue Eyes….
