We live in the city, but behind our apartment building there is a big, woodsy hill. We usually see a lot of squirrels, chipmunks, skunks and opossum (no fireflies, tho)…but yesterday, for the first time since we moved here in 2000…we saw a deer!
I live in a small city (300,000 residents) that is quite well forested. Flying over it looks like a woods with areas of shopping interspersed. We have an over-abundance of deer. The fireflies are almost done, and the cicadas have been singing for 3 weeks. Summer is almost over—sigh.
Haven’t seen any all year. I wonder if the geckos got them all. (I saw it once, and you could see the flash through their transluscent skin for about 30 seconds.)
These have been so GREAT all week! We don’t have fireflies here in central Florida, but I got out our old Nat King Cole album (yep, REAL VINYL) “Those Lazy, Hazy Days of Summer,” and played it while we sat on the porch in the(stifling) humidity. Brought a smile to my lips. . .
I’m surrounded by woods and the fireflies are gone for the Summer, but were out back in June. There’s all kinds of wildlife here including turkeys. I actually feed the Possums and Raccoons every night. I put out fruit and cat food for them.
Friend’s mother lived in their downstairs room and watched all the animals feeding outside. When she had a stroke there, they came to the windowed door and tried to make her get up.
Nun’Ya BidnessProbably a factor. However, despite a record wet June, the idiots didn’t start spraying until mid August, well past the usual lightning bug season. The flashing lizard stomach was in early July 2012. The use of persistent poisons like neonictonics is probably more to blame than Malathion mosquito spray which at least ultimately breaks down.

No fireflies where I am, but deer are across the street from me, raccoons in the area, the occasional possum.

Would you like to swing on a star? Carry moonbeams home in a jar?
